Why Shims?
Simple answer is that tow receivers are usually manufactured oversized. A standard 50mm receiver can measure as much as 52.8mm. That means there is movement between the 50mm hitch shank and the receiver. The tow bar manufacturers often include a grub screw to reduce the movement. (We think they should just make the receivers the proper size instead).
The shims are the best way to eliminate this movement. The kit comes with 3 different size stainless steel shims, and these should be used with as many as required for each situation.
